It is often used in direct-coupled 2-stroke propulsion plants to monitor the correct function of a torsional vibration damper, for misfiring detection or shaft power monitoring. It creates warnings and alarms if pre-defined vibration levels are exceeded and thus gives additional safety to the operator.
With the help of the Geislinger Monitoring it is possible determine the condition of the damper before a dry-docking. If the evaluation of the measurements shows that the damper on a 2-stroke engine is working properly no overhaul is necessary which reduces the dry-docking cost.
The newly developed 5th generation (GMS Mk5) extends this main functionality by new features in order to be even more beneficial for the ship owners and operators. The GMS Mk5 follows a modular approach, which makes it possible to configure the system according to the plant layout or monitoring needs. It is possible to monitor a twin-engine installation with only one system unit or to combine a damper-monitoring with a coupling- or power-monitoring. Furthermore it is not limited to torsional vibrations only, but offers the opportunity to monitor axial vibrations as well. This modularity helps to reduce the number of different systems on board and reduces cost and installation time.
The new color display and user-interface is designed to give quick information about the system status by using traffic light signaling. The system can be integrated into existing ship infrastructure via Ethernet, CANbus, Modbus, analogue- and relay-outputs. The GMS Mk5 will be available from 2014 on.
